Sweco to consult on construction of large-scale plant for fossil-free steel
Sweco will be a consultant to H2 Green Steel (H2GS AB) as it develops large-scale fossil-free steel production in Norrbotten County, Sweden. The plant, with fully integrated steel production based on a fossil-free manufacturing process, is an important step in the transition to fossil-free steel production.
The steel industry is currently one of the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions. The ability to switch to fossil-free production therefore plays a key role in helping the EU achieve its climate goals by 2030. Climate change adaptation will also sharply increase demand for fossil-free steel from several sectors, such as the automotive industry and the energy sector. When large-scale, fully integrated fossil-free steel production is developed in Norrbotten, it will be an important step in the transition to fossil-free steel production in Europe and in accelerating adaptation to climate change.
The company behind this project is H2 Green Steel, which has hired Sweco to participate in the preparation of the environmental permit application, electric power supply, logistics and process integration.
“We are proud that we have been entrusted to consult on this ground-breaking project. It’s very inspiring to work with the team behind H2 Green Steel with its strong drive and business acumen,” said Fredrik Axby, regional manager of Sweco’s energy and industry consultants.
The business will be based in the Boden-Luleå area with good access to both high-quality iron ore and energy from renewable energy sources. Large-scale steel production will begin in 2024 and H2 Green Steel plans to reach a production capacity of five million tonnes of fossil-free steel by 2030.
“In this unique project, we will use the entire spectrum of Sweco’s expertise and will constantly challenge old truths to create the best solutions. The project will make a major contribution to reducing carbon dioxide emissions,” said Axby.
