€1billion+ upgrade plans for N/M20 Cork-to-Limerick Project unveiled

The N/M20 Cork-to-Limerick Project has reached a significant milestone, as the Preferred Transport Solution was unveiled for a €1billion+ upgrade package to improve links – as well as travelling experiences and sustainability – between Cork and Limerick.

We’re extremely proud to have played a major part in bringing this project forward to this major milestone. Alongside our project colleagues at JB Barry and Partners and WSP, the Sweco Ireland transportation team has led the development of key elements of the design and appraisal which identified the multi modal Preferred Transport Solution for the N/M20 Cork to Limerick Project – which is identified as a priority investment in the Government’s National Development Plan 2021-2030.

Sweco’s role in the project

Sweco Ireland’s Demitrios Paraskevakis is Project Manager for this phase of the N/M20 journey. We are the Traffic and Active Travel Lead (Tara O’Leary), the Appraisal lead (Steve Wallace), the Drainage lead (Mary Creedon), contributors to Rail Appraisal (Dermot Hanney & Steve Steve Wallace) and also lead on four environmental areas of Air Quality (Jennifer Simpson), Waste (Maeve English), Flooding (also Mary Creedon) and Carbon (David Jackson). In addition to our lead we provided Highway design for our section, CAD support, GIS support and general assistance as required throughout the process.

Reaching this milestone decision has involved a lot of proactive work from teams across the three Companies and we can all be proud of the multi-modal vision we have developed.

This project will enhance the regional connectivity between the cities of Cork and Limerick and transforms the towns and villages along the existing N20.

A wide array of skills was required to achieve this outcome – technical competence, flexibility, hard work, team building both internally and externally and too many more to mention. I am proud of what we have achieved with this project together so far.

Liam Prendiville JB Barry and Partners Managing Director

Ultimately, the N/M20 project will create around 80km of active travel (walking and cycling) infrastructure, bringing the communities of Cork, Blarney, Grenagh, Rathduff, Mallow, New Twopothouse, Buttevant, Charleville, Bruree, Banogue, Croom, Patrickswell and Limerick closer together while also providing a more sustainable network for the Ireland of tomorrow.

Having identified our solution, a virtual public display for our Preferred Transport Solution opened to the public last week and can be visited here. The virtual tour allows local land and property owners, stakeholders and the general public to learn more about the project and explore the changes that are proposed. Initial feedback on the Preferred Transport Solution has been largely positive…

This is an important step forward in progressing a range of transportation solutions connecting Limerick and Cork as identified in the Government’s National Development Plan 2021-2030.
